Kilkenny Council Announces Urgent Residential Development Plans
URGENT UPDATE: Kilkenny County Council has just announced significant redevelopment plans for 62 Barrack Street, Castlecomer, aimed at addressing the pressing housing crisis in the region. This development, which includes the refurbishment of an existing two-storey structure, is set to transform the commercial space into a modern 2-bedroom dwelling.
The council’s proposal outlines the demolition of outdated rear extensions and outbuildings, paving the way for the construction of two two-storey structures that will house four one-bedroom apartments. These plans are expected to roll out in phases, starting with the refurbishment of the protected structure and initial demolition tasks.
Local councillor Maurice Shortall has expressed his strong support for the initiative, calling it “great news” for the community. He emphasized the urgent need for one-bedroom apartments, which are currently in short supply. “This is why local authorities will be front-runners tackling the housing crisis,” he stated, highlighting the critical impact of this development on local housing availability.
The first phase will focus on refurbishing the existing structure and modifying its use, with subsequent phases dedicated to the construction of the new apartments and landscaping. The council aims to complete these projects efficiently to meet the growing demand for housing in the area.
Residents and interested parties are encouraged to provide feedback on the plans, with the latest date for comments set for 5pm on January 26, 2026. This open dialogue will allow the community to engage directly with the council regarding the future of housing in Castlecomer.
As Kilkenny faces a housing shortage, these developments signal a proactive approach by local authorities to enhance residential options. Community members are urged to stay informed and participate in this crucial discussion, ensuring that their voices are heard as plans move forward.
