Kilkenny Hosts EU Leaders for Key Talks on Regional Development
UPDATE: Kilkenny is buzzing with excitement as over 200 influential European delegates gather for crucial talks on EU Cohesion Funds. The Southern Regional Assembly (SRA), led by local Fianna Fáil councillor Andrew McGuinness, is hosting this significant event at the Medieval Mile Museum, highlighting the city’s role in shaping future regional policies.
The conference, which commenced last week, is not only a key moment for discussion among leaders from 27 EU member states but also a substantial economic boost for Kilkenny. Delegates include representatives from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO), the Irish Government, and all three Irish Regional Assemblies.
During the event, attendees explored pressing strategic issues and shared innovative solutions. A highlight was the visit to the Abbey Quarter, showcasing investments from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and local authorities. The group also toured the Carnegie Library on John’s Quay, which recently secured substantial funding under the ‘THRIVE’ – Town Centre First Heritage Revival scheme.
In an exclusive statement to Kilkenny Live, SRA Cathaoirleach Andrew McGuinness expressed his pride, stating, “Hosting this event has brought people from all over Europe to Kilkenny. They not only engaged in vital discussions but also enjoyed our hotels, attractions, and local businesses.”
The impact of this gathering extends beyond immediate economic benefits. David Kelly, Director of the Southern Regional Assembly, emphasized the importance of EU funding, stating, “It has been a catalyst for positive change in our region, supporting innovation and sustainability. Investment in local projects, like the Carnegie Library, combined with local vision, can deliver real benefits for communities.”
As the conference unfolds, the focus remains on how cohesion policy can ensure balanced regional development, preventing any community from being left behind. With strategic conversations underway, all eyes are on Kilkenny as it plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of regional funding and development.
Stay tuned for more updates as this important event progresses and influences the trajectory of regional policies across Europe.
