Kilkenny Hurling Finals: Dicksboro and Carrickshock Claim Titles
UPDATE: The Kilkenny Vehicle Centre Minor Hurling Finals concluded with dramatic victories for Dicksboro and Carrickshock at UPMC Nowlan Park on October 14, 2023. In a thrilling day of hurling, six teams battled for supremacy across Roinn A, B, and C, but it was Dicksboro’s remarkable comeback and Carrickshock’s nail-biting extra-time win that captured the headlines.
In the Roinn C final, Kilmacow dominated Bennettsbridge with an emphatic score of 0-21 to 1-9 at MW Hire Dunmore. The southern team maintained control throughout, showcasing their strength and skill.
The excitement escalated in the Roinn B final, where Carrickshock faced Rower Inistioge. After a gripping contest that pushed both teams to their limits, Carrickshock emerged victorious with a score of 2-22 to 3-14 after extra time. Initially, Carrickshock seemed to have the match sewn up, leading by 1-17 to 1-9 thanks to a crucial goal from David Franks. However, Rower Inistioge staged a remarkable comeback, scoring late goals that forced the game into extra time.
Despite Rower Inistioge’s momentum, Carrickshock seized control early in the first extra period with a quick goal from Liam O’Grady. They never looked back, holding on for the win as both teams exhibited incredible heart and determination.
Later in the day, Dicksboro crushed the dreams of a three-peat for James Stephens (The Village), claiming the Roinn A title with a score of 3-20 to 2-17. This victory solidified Dicksboro’s position at the top of the grade’s roll of honour and avenged their defeat against their rivals in the 2024 final.
In a riveting first half, The Village led after a Bill McDermott goal, but Dicksboro responded vigorously. The second half saw Dicksboro turn a two-point deficit into a two-point lead, highlighted by a key goal from Joe Dowling and a series of points from Donnacha Hennessy and Robbie Lacey.
Dicksboro capitalized on a dominant stretch, outscoring The Village 1-6 to 0-1 within a critical window, effectively sealing their victory. Although a late goal from Zac Scanlon stirred hopes for The Village, Dicksboro’s defense held firm, ensuring their triumph.
This thrilling day of hurling not only showcased the talent within Kilkenny but also highlighted the emotional stakes for both players and fans alike. The victories will be celebrated across the region, marking a significant moment in the history of these teams.
