Kilkenny Launches Urgent Safety Initiatives for Nightlife
URGENT UPDATE: Kilkenny is set to transform its nightlife safety with a series of innovative initiatives announced just today. The Kilkenny County Council, in partnership with key stakeholders, is launching the Night Time Economy pilot program, aimed at enhancing safety and fostering community spirit in the city center.
Under the banner ‘Safe & Sound’, this initiative includes free 30-minute online training modules for local businesses and their employees. The program, confirmed by Minister for Culture, Communications, and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, is designed to make Kilkenny’s nightlife safer and more inclusive for all residents and visitors.
In addition, the ‘Light Up, Light Up’ campaign—collaborating with the Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce—will see 23 city center businesses keeping their shopfronts illuminated until 1 AM from November to January. This effort aims to enhance visibility on the streets, providing a safer environment for those walking home from a night out or waiting for public transport.
The Night Time Economy pilot also features a comprehensive ‘Safe & Sound’ communications campaign, developed in partnership with An Garda Siochana, the Vintners Federation of Ireland, and the Local Community Safety Partnership. Inspector Alma Molloy emphasizes the importance of cultivating a culture of safety and respect within the community.
Designed specifically for the unique demands of the Night-Time Economy, the training is applicable to a wide range of establishments, including pubs, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, theatres, and more. This program is timely as the festive season approaches, aiming to support local businesses while ensuring an enjoyable experience for the public.
Mayor of Kilkenny, Cllr John Coonan, expressed enthusiasm about the collaborative effort: “As we approach the festive season, I am really pleased to see the partnership by all of the stakeholders involved to promote a safe and vibrant nightlife in our city.”
Conor Sweeney, Kilkenny City’s Night Time Economy Advisor, echoed these sentiments, stating, “By announcing these three key initiatives and working with key stakeholders, we feel they will support local businesses and ensure that the public can have an even more enjoyable experience in our city.”
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as Kilkenny takes significant steps to ensure a safe and welcoming nightlife. Share this news to spread awareness about these important initiatives!
