Kilkenny Legends Shine in Urgent Hurling for Cancer Charity Match

UPDATE: Iconic hurling stars lit up Netwatch Cullen Park in Carlow on July 10, 2023, during the 14th Hurling for Cancer charity match, raising vital funds for the Irish Cancer Society. The high-stakes game saw Kilkenny legends TJ Reid and Walter Walsh each netting a remarkable hat-trick, leading Jim Bolger’s Stars to an exhilarating 14-10 victory over Davy Russell’s Best.
The match, filled with thrilling moments, showcased an impressive line-up featuring players with a staggering total of 47 All-Ireland medals and 46 All-Stars. The crowd erupted as Reid and Walsh, among other Kilkenny greats, took to the field, creating an electric atmosphere for a worthy cause.
The action started slowly, with both teams tied at 0-3 after the first ten minutes. However, Bolger’s Stars seized control, with Reid and Eoin Cody scoring early goals that set the tone for the match. Despite a stellar performance from five-time All-Star goalkeeper Brendan Cummins, who delivered a series of incredible saves, the floodgates opened, leading to a barrage of goals.
At halftime, Bolger’s Stars led 8-7 to 4-7, and even a motivational talk from Brian Cody on the sidelines couldn’t shift the momentum. The second half saw Walsh and substitute Eddie Brennan continue the scoring spree, while TikTok sensation Sean Carroll surprised many with three notable points from play.
The final whistle blew with a score of 14-10 to 8-14, but the focus remained on fundraising, not the scoreline. Celebrities like jockey Rachael Blackmore and boxer Bernard Dunne took on officiating roles, while Marty Morrissey provided lively commentary. The event attracted thousands, including soccer legend Paul McGrath, who watched from the stands.
As the night concluded, Reid was awarded the trophy amidst cheers from thousands of young fans who rushed the pitch for autographs from their heroes. The Hurling for Cancer initiative has raised over €1.6 million since its inception in 2011, and hopes are high that this year’s event will push total funds raised to €2 million.
This year’s match not only celebrated the spirit of hurling but also united the community for an urgent cause, emphasizing the ongoing battle against cancer. As the excitement fades, the impact of this charity match and the funds raised will continue to resonate, making a difference in the lives of countless individuals affected by cancer.
