URGENT UPDATE: The Kilkenny Archaeological Society is hosting a must-attend talk on the rich history of railways in Kilkenny, scheduled for Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the historic Rothe House. Renowned railway historian Donie Butler will guide attendees through the fascinating journey of the Kilkenny to Maryborough (Portlaoise) railway line, built between 1864 and 1867.

This talk is not just another lecture; it is a deep dive into how the railway shaped Kilkenny’s development. The line, constructed by the Kilkenny Junction Railway Company, extended from the western end of Kilkenny Railway Station through significant locations such as Dunmore, Ballyragget, Attanagh, and Abbeyleix, before connecting to the Cork to Dublin line.

Attendees will also learn about the notable Dinin Bridge river crossing, where remnants of the original railway bed can still be spotted, offering a tangible connection to Kilkenny’s past. The branch line to Castlecomer Colliery, established in 1919, will also be discussed, adding another layer to the railway’s storied history.

The original line closed its doors on December 31, 1962, with the Comer branch following suit just a day later, marking the end of an era in Kilkenny’s transportation narrative.

Tickets for this engaging event are priced at €8 for members and €10 for non-members, making it an accessible opportunity for all history enthusiasts to explore Kilkenny’s railway legacy.

Don’t miss this chance to connect with Kilkenny’s historical roots and understand how rail transport influenced the region. Mark your calendars for October 15 and prepare for an enlightening session that promises to be both informative and memorable. Share this event with friends and family—let’s keep Kilkenny’s history alive!
