Kilkenny Train Passengers Face Disruptions Due to Flood Works

Significant train service disruptions are set to affect passengers in Kilkenny and Thomastown due to major flood prevention works aimed at safeguarding the rail line on the approach to Waterford. The works, part of the Waterford North Quays Development, are scheduled to begin on August 25, 2023, and will continue until March 26, 2026, resulting in alterations to travel schedules for those using the Waterford-Dublin line.

The disruptions will occur during specific hours, from 08:00 to 14:30 on Mondays to Thursdays. Passengers on the 7:20 and 10:15 services from Dublin Heuston to Waterford will find that these trains will terminate at Kilkenny. Bus transfers will be provided from Kilkenny to both Thomastown and Waterford. Conversely, the 11:00 and 13:05 services from Waterford to Dublin Heuston will also undergo changes, with bus transfers from Waterford and Thomastown to Kilkenny, followed by train service from Kilkenny to Heuston.

The flood prevention project is being carried out by contractors for the Waterford City and County Council (WCCC). This initiative aims to address the persistent flooding issues that have affected this area for many years, ensuring that the railway service will be resilient to climate impacts in the future. In addition to mitigating flooding risks for existing services and the upcoming new Plunkett Station, the project includes the installation of a new electrical signaling system to replace the outdated mechanical system.

According to a spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann, the company has collaborated closely with WCCC and the main contractor, BAM, to minimize disruptions during the project. “On detailed review of the works, due to the potential to foul the line, Iarnród Éireann has identified that line closure is required and unavoidable,” the spokesperson stated. The need for line closures arises during the lifting and placing of piles, which are necessary for the flood defense system.

The agreed work program aims to balance the urgency of completing the flood defense system with the intent to limit disruption to the busiest rail services along this route. Passengers are advised that while the flood defense works will necessitate interruptions to some off-peak rail services on Monday to Thursday mornings, efforts are being made to mitigate overall impact.

Funding for the Waterford North Quays public transport elements comes from the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority. As the project progresses, Iarnród Éireann urges affected passengers to stay informed about service changes and to plan their journeys accordingly during this extended period of works.
