Kilkenny’s Rossiter Shoe Repairs Closes After 38 Years of Service
URGENT UPDATE: The iconic Rossiter Shoe Repairs and Pedorthics in Kilkenny City has officially closed its doors for the final time as of Saturday, October 14, 2023. After 38 years of dedicated service, owner Michael Rossiter announced the transition to an online-only operation, marking a significant milestone for the local business community.
With heartfelt tributes pouring in from loyal customers, Rossiter expressed his gratitude, stating, “To all our loyal customers, the day has finally come! It’s time to collect my lotto prize. My retirement from cobbling!” This emotional farewell signifies not only the end of an era but also the beginning of a new journey for Rossiter, who plans to remain active in the community.
Rossiter first opened the shop in May 1988 at the old arcade before relocating to its current site on the Butterslip. The shop has become a fixture in Kilkenny, known for its exceptional craftsmanship and service. The closure has elicited a wave of well-wishes, with messages flooding in from the community. One customer remarked, “Congratulations on your retirement!! You will be missed so so much,” while another added, “The very best of luck in your retirement. You’ll be missed in Kilkenny.”
In a recent interview with the Kilkenny People, Rossiter shared his excitement for future endeavors, stating, “There are things I want to do with my sons. I want to give them a little bit of mentoring through little projects they are going through, so no, Michael Rossiter ain’t gone. He’ll still be around.” He hinted at an upcoming project with his son, promising more details soon.
This closure not only marks the end of a beloved local institution but also highlights the evolving landscape of small businesses. As Rossiter transitions to online operations, he aims to maintain connections with his dedicated customer base. The local community will undoubtedly feel the impact of this change, as many have cherished their visits to the store over the decades.
As Rossiter embarks on this new chapter, the outpouring of support from the community underscores the deep connections formed over nearly four decades. His legacy in Kilkenny will continue, even as he steps away from the storefront.
