Kilkenny’s St Kieran’s Street Set for Urgent Revamp This September
Urgent Update: Major redevelopment is on the horizon for Kilkenny’s St Kieran’s Street, as the Kilkenny County Council confirms that the St Kieran’s Street and Market Square Urban Enhancement Scheme is set to kick off in September 2023. This initiative aims to refurbish and enhance the urban landscape, transforming a key area of the city.
The project will focus on the refurbishment and resurfacing of St Kieran’s Street, featuring a significant decluttering of street furniture and signage. Enhancements will also be made at the intersection of St Mary’s Lane, The Butter Slip, and St Kieran’s Street, creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
According to Stan Cullen, Area Engineer with Kilkenny County Council, the local authority has received the green light to proceed with their preferred contractor after a successful tendering process last year. “We are excited to move forward with this crucial project,” Cullen stated.
As preparations ramp up, Cullen plans to meet with local traders to discuss potential impacts from road closures and delivery logistics. “There will be implications from a road closures point of view which will impact deliveries, so alternative arrangements need to be introduced,” he emphasized, assuring that he will work closely with businesses to minimize disruptions.
City councillor Cllr David FitzGerald expressed his enthusiasm for the project but raised concerns about the timing. “I am delighted about the improvements, but I am slightly concerned that starting in September could lead to works extending into the Christmas period, which could negatively impact local business,” he remarked. FitzGerald underscored the importance of contractor engagement with local businesses to ensure a smooth transition during construction.
The upcoming enhancements are expected to boost the local economy and improve the overall aesthetic of Kilkenny’s city center, appealing to both residents and visitors alike. As the city prepares for these significant changes, local businesses and residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged in the process.
What’s Next: As the start date approaches, residents and traders will be kept updated on the project’s progress and any upcoming meetings. With the potential impact on holiday shopping, all eyes will be on how the council navigates this critical redevelopment phase.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as Kilkenny gears up for a brighter, more accessible urban space.
