Labour Demands Urgent Overhaul of Failing School Transport System

BREAKING: The Labour Party has just announced a critical call for an “urgent overhaul” of the “failing” school transport system, amid a significant rise in parental complaints regarding bus placements for their children. Labour’s Education Spokesperson, Eoghan Kenny, insists that Minister for Education Helen McEntee must act immediately to address a scheme that is leaving working families in dire circumstances.

Parents are facing challenges in securing bus places, with many reporting they have been informed of a lack of available spots. Kenny highlighted that some families are being denied transportation because the Department of Education claims their child’s school is not a designated “feeder school,” despite it being their closest option.

According to the current School Transport Scheme, children at primary level qualify for transport if they attend their nearest national school and live more than 3.2 km away. For post-primary students, they must attend their nearest school and live over 4.8 km away. However, Kenny argues that the existing criteria are outdated and failing to meet the needs of families who are now forced to scramble for alternative transport options.

“Parents are relying on neighbors or driving long distances themselves,” Kenny stated. “Some have even had to cut back their working hours or leave their jobs entirely just to ensure their children can get to school.” He emphasized that minor adjustments to the system are insufficient; a complete overhaul is essential to expand capacity on popular routes and ensure a fair allocation process.

Kenny is urging Minister McEntee to convene an “immediate review” of the school transport system, stressing that the demand for bus placements has outpaced the current framework, creating significant barriers to education for many families.

In a response, a spokesperson for the Education Department noted that the School Transport Scheme is expanding, now supporting over 135,000 students—a 6% increase from last year. They mentioned ongoing plans for further route expansions and pilot programs aimed at enhancing service delivery.

However, Darren O’Rourke, Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Education, criticized the current system. He pointed out that the School Transport 2030 report recommends reducing distance criteria to 1 km for primary students and 2 km for post-primary students, arguing that arbitrary eligibility criteria continue to deny children access to local school buses.

“This is not just a review period; we need immediate solutions,” O’Rourke urged, highlighting the frustrations of families left without transport.

Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore also raised alarms, demanding immediate clarity on how many students will be impacted by last-minute cancellations of bus services. Parents reported receiving emails from Bus Éireann stating that transport arrangements for their children’s school routes are unconfirmed, despite eligibility for the School Transport Scheme.

Whitmore called for the implementation of a nationwide school bus program to ensure every student who needs transport can access it. “We need a realistic timeline for resolution and to know which routes and students are affected,” she stated.
