Learner Driver Caught Speeding in Dun Laoghaire, Vehicle Seized
UPDATE: A learner driver in Dun Laoghaire has been caught speeding, leading to the immediate seizure of their vehicle and a fine. The incident occurred earlier this week when the driver, unaccompanied and fresh from failing their driving test just last week, told An Garda Síochána, “it’s not that bad.”
In a striking display of negligence, the driver was stopped by Gardaí for speeding, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. The Gardaí took to social media to share the details, emphasizing the critical nature of road safety. “Gardaí from the Dún Laoghaire stopped this vehicle for speeding. The driver was an unaccompanied learner who informed Gardaí ‘it’s not that bad, that they only failed their driving test last week,’” they reported.
In a broader context, the urgency of road safety is underscored by another recent incident in Wicklow. There, the Baltinglass Roads Policing Unit arrested a driver for speeding at an alarming 160 km/h without insurance. Their response was equally reckless; upon being stopped, the driver attempted to flee, highlighting a dangerous disregard for safety.
Gardaí warned, “Notions won’t beat road safety,” in a statement shared on social media. They added, “Spoiler Alert: Blue lights are faster. Stopped, arrested, charged. Slow down. Get insured. Or expect a very different kind of finish line.”
This week’s incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to road regulations. In Ireland, it is mandatory to have car insurance to operate a vehicle, whether as the primary driver or as a named driver on someone else’s policy. Failing to display an insurance disk can result in an initial fixed charge of €60, which escalates to €90 if unpaid after 28 days. Furthermore, driving without insurance can lead to penalties of up to €5,000, five penalty points, and even a possible six-month prison sentence.
The message from Gardaí is clear: road safety must be everyone’s priority. As these incidents unfold, the public is urged to comply with all driving regulations to ensure not only their safety but that of others on the road.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as authorities continue to enforce strict measures aimed at enhancing road safety across Ireland.
