Leaving Certificate Results Plunge to Five-Year Low for 65,444 Students

UPDATE: The Leaving Certificate 2025 results have been released today, revealing a significant decline in top grades for over 65,000 students across Ireland. This year’s results, published at 10 AM this morning, show a 2.6% reduction in H1 grades, marking the lowest achievement levels in five years.
This year, a total of 65,444 candidates sat the exams, which is an increase of more than 4,000 students compared to last year. However, the reduction in top marks is creating a sense of urgency among students aiming for college placements. The State Examinations Commission confirmed that only 11.7% of results achieved H1 grades, down from 14.3% last year, contributing to increased competition for university spots.
The decline in top grades follows years of inflated scores due to post-assessment adjustments. In 2025, only 52.4% of grades were elevated compared to 68% in 2024 and 71% in 2023. This sharp decrease in grade adjustments is causing concern among students as they prepare for the next phases of their education.
In a show of support, Taoiseach Michael Martin took to social media to congratulate students, stating, “Today is Leaving Cert results day. Congratulations to all of you on what you have achieved so far in life.” He encouraged students to reflect on their journey and embrace future opportunities with optimism.
Students can access their results through the Candidate Self Service Portal, using their examination number, Student Portal Account Password, and PPS number. The first round of college offers will be released on August 27, 2025, at 2 PM, with a closing date for acceptance on September 2, 2025. Following that, Round 2 offers will be available on September 8, 2025.
As students navigate this crucial moment, the implications of these results extend beyond individual achievement, affecting university admissions and career paths for many. The landscape is shifting, and students are feeling the pressure as they look ahead to their futures.
Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops, and share this information with fellow students navigating this critical moment in their educational journeys.
