Letterkenny Rugby Club Wins €5,000 Texaco Sports Initiative Award

UPDATE: Letterkenny Rugby Football Club has just been awarded €5,000 as part of the Texaco Support for Sport initiative, announced today, September 18, 2025. This funding will significantly enhance the club’s grassroots outreach, targeting local primary schools and providing essential gym equipment for youth members.
The presentation took place earlier today at the Texaco Service Station in Glencar, with club representative Karl Tonna accepting the award alongside fellow members. Texaco dealer Harry Dorrian and Valero Area Sales Manager Michael Honan were present to celebrate this vital contribution to the community.
This funding is part of a larger annual allocation of €130,000 designated for sports clubs across Ireland, with this year’s initiative focusing on community engagement and promoting wellness through sports. Letterkenny RFC’s commitment to fostering rugby and fitness in the area makes them a deserving recipient of this award.
Former Irish rugby international Donncha O’Callaghan, who oversees the judging process, praised the initiative for providing clubs with access to funds that are not influenced by popularity or membership size. “Investing in grassroots level will lead to a brighter future for everyone involved with the Club,” he noted, emphasizing the impact of such initiatives on local talent development.
With a history of supporting community sports, the Texaco initiative has distributed almost €650,000 to over 125 sports clubs since its inception. Previous winners from Donegal include Gleneely Colts FC (2021) and Muff’s Naomh Pádraig Uisce Chaoin GAA Club (2022), highlighting the ongoing commitment to local sports development.
As Letterkenny RFC prepares to implement its outreach program, the club aims to inspire the next generation of athletes and strengthen community ties. The application process for the 2026 Texaco Support for Sport initiative will reopen in the New Year, providing another opportunity for clubs, including those that may have previously been unsuccessful.
This announcement is a significant moment for Letterkenny Rugby Club and the surrounding community, marking a new chapter in promoting sports and wellness at the grassroots level. For more information on the initiative, visit www.TexacoSupportforSport.com.
