UPDATE: The future of Limerick City is under urgent assessment as the University of Limerick (UL) and the Limerick City and County Council launch a groundbreaking project aimed at reshaping the city. Kicking off this week at CityLab on UL’s Sarsfield Street campus, a series of public events will focus on developing a sustainable vision for the Treaty City.

This One City Revisited project is set to engage the community and examine Limerick’s future in line with the Limerick Development Plan and the Limerick Climate Action Plan. Researchers at UL are expanding a physical model of Limerick City, currently scaled at 1:500, to visualize potential developments and improve urban living conditions.

Professor Merritt Buchol from UL emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This project continues our partnership with LCCC and builds on our joint presentation last September at the Science Summit at the United Nations in New York.”

Public engagement is a key component, with two major events scheduled: the first, titled ‘City Model – Future Limerick’, will be held on August 21 from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. The second, a Twilight Thursday event, is set for August 28 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Both events will feature interactive components, allowing participants to test scenarios and visualize changes to their urban environment.

Associate Professor Peter Carroll highlighted the need for innovative living solutions, stating, “The study of key streets, such as William Street, Parnell Street, and Hyde Road, can change how we view living in Limerick’s city centre. We need to see better living options for apartment living and compact growth in Limerick.”

As Limerick continues to evolve, this project will play a critical role in shaping its future, addressing immediate urban challenges while fostering community involvement. Residents are encouraged to attend the events at CityLab to contribute their ideas and help mold Limerick’s trajectory.

Stay tuned for further updates as this significant project unfolds, and don’t miss your chance to be part of the conversation about Limerick City’s future!
