Limerick Man Charged with Possession of Sawn-Off Shotgun

URGENT UPDATE: A man from Limerick has been charged with the possession of a sawn-off shotgun, leading to his remand in custody during a special court session on August 29, 2024. Liam “Lika” Casey, aged 42, appeared before the Limerick District Court in connection with an ongoing garda investigation into gunfire incidents that occurred last year.
The charges against Mr. Casey stem from an alleged incident on November 8, 2024, at Meagher Avenue, Prior’s Land, Limerick, located just off Hyde Road in Ballinacurra Weston. During the brief hearing, presided over by Judge Fiona Brennan, Mr. Casey remained silent and did not enter a plea.
Gardaí, represented by Garda Seán O’Connor, confirmed that Mr. Casey was apprehended and charged on August 29, with possession of a twelve-gauge, double-barreled sawn-off shotgun. The charge violates Section 27(B) of the Firearms Act 1964, which carries a potential maximum sentence of 14 years in prison if convicted.
Authorities expressed their opposition to bail, citing the nature of the charges. Mr. Casey’s solicitor, Tom Kiely, indicated that his client would not be seeking bail at this time. Mr. Kiely noted that Mr. Casey is currently receiving social welfare and will require legal aid, which Judge Brennan granted.
As Mr. Casey was escorted from the courtroom, he received support from family members present in the court. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to reappear before Limerick District Court on September 2, 2024, for further directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as this case develops, highlighting the serious implications surrounding firearm possession in the region. Stay tuned for further updates as more information is expected to emerge in the coming days.
