Limerick Mayor Demands New Team for Urgent Transformation
UPDATE: Limerick Mayor John Moran has just announced an urgent need for a “specific new experienced team” to lead the Limerick City and County Council through a critical transformation following his election. In a pivotal email sent to council staff on Friday night, Moran emphasized the necessity of changing approaches to ensure the council has the right resources to effectively navigate this transition.
This announcement comes on the heels of a contentious email exchange with Dr. Pat Daly, the local authority’s director general, who expressed his disappointment with Moran’s previous comments regarding council operations during an interview on Live95. The mayor’s latest communication, which was not shared with fellow councillors, highlights a growing divide in leadership perspectives within the council.
Moran stated, “We need to approach things differently and ensure we have the right people, skills, tools, and support,” underscoring his commitment to maximizing the potential of Ireland’s first directly elected mayoral position. He added that the council has not yet evolved into an organization capable of fully leveraging this unique opportunity, which is crucial for Limerick’s future.
In his email, the mayor reiterated his respect for the council staff and management, expressing his belief that “continuous improvement” is achievable when the right support systems are in place. He thanked the many who resonated with his message, stating, “The people of Limerick deserve even more from us when it comes to delivering results.”
Moran’s communication also addressed the need for clarity and collaboration, saying, “There are two sides to every debate.” He urged all senior leadership, including himself, to reflect on how they can enhance their contributions to the community. “This email is not an effort to ascribe blame,” he clarified, but rather a call to action for collective improvement.
As the October Bank Holiday approaches, Moran signed off with well-wishes for a restful weekend, emphasizing the urgency of his message. Limerick City and County Council has declined to comment on the internal communications, reflecting the sensitive nature of the ongoing discussions.
The situation raises critical questions about the future direction of Limerick’s local governance and how effectively the council can adapt to meet the evolving needs of its citizens. Observers are closely watching to see how these developments unfold and what actions will be taken in the coming weeks.
