Limerick Minister Backs Heather Humphreys for Irish Presidency

UPDATE: Limerick Minister Patrick O’Donovan has officially thrown his support behind former Monaghan minister Heather Humphreys in her bid for the Fine Gael nomination for President of Ireland. This announcement, made earlier today, intensifies the race against fellow Munster candidate and Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly.
Minister O’Donovan praised Humphreys as a “good friend” and emphasized her extensive qualifications, stating, “For me, Heather Humphreys has all of the qualities and attributes that are needed at this time to be the first citizen and a constitutional protector in terms of President of Ireland.” He noted her deep connections within communities across the country, highlighting her impactful work in rural development and social protection.
In a compelling endorsement, O’Donovan recalled their shared political journey, stating, “I served in government and served in cabinet with her… she’s rooted in her community.” He underscored Humphreys’ extensive public service, asserting that “there isn’t a parish or a four crossroads in this country that she hasn’t touched somewhere.”
O’Donovan contrasted his support for Humphreys with that of Fine Gael TD Noel McCarthy, who endorsed MEP Kelly, commending his performance in the European elections where he secured 125,000 votes. McCarthy described Kelly as a “great public servant” with broad public appeal, recalling his pivotal role in allowing soccer games at Croke Park during renovations at Lansdowne Road.
Despite these endorsements, O’Donovan remained firm in his belief that Humphreys is the superior candidate. He pointed out her initiatives, such as providing every child in Ireland with a hot school meal and her involvement in community projects, stating, “She has traipsed every length and breadth of this country.”
On the Claire Byrne radio programme on RTE Radio One, O’Donovan articulated that Humphreys embodies the qualities of inclusion and community building that Ireland urgently needs in its next president. He passionately stated, “Heather Humphreys has never backed away from a single job in her life,” underscoring her determination and dedication to public service.
As the race for the Fine Gael nomination heats up, all eyes are on the upcoming party decisions. Supporters of both candidates are mobilizing, and the political landscape is shifting rapidly. What happens next could reshape the future of the Irish presidency.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the competition intensifies and the nomination process unfolds.
