URGENT UPDATE: A spectacular lunar eclipse is poised to grace the skies over Ireland this Sunday, September 7, 2023. The celestial event will unfold from 8 PM to 9:30 PM, offering skywatchers a breathtaking view for approximately 90 minutes.

According to Astronomy Ireland, this eclipse occurs when Earth aligns directly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow that can transform the moon into a stunning blood-red hue. This phenomenon is not only safe to view with the naked eye but is also easily accessible for amateur astronomers across the country.

While the eclipse is visible nationwide, the East coast may enjoy clearer conditions. However, Met Éireann has warned of potential showers affecting the Atlantic fringes on Sunday night, advising that “any showers will mainly affect Atlantic fringes with long clear spells elsewhere.” Temperatures are expected to drop between 6C and 10C.

Astronomy enthusiasts are encouraged to capture this rare event. David Moore, Editor of Astronomy Ireland magazine, stated: “There will not be a Total Eclipse of the Moon visible from Ireland until New Year’s Eve 2028, so we want people to make the most of this eclipse and send us their photos for a special edition of Astronomy Ireland magazine.”

This is an incredible opportunity for those passionate about astronomy to engage and share their experiences. Even simple camera phones can capture memorable moments, and the magazine aims to showcase these photos.

Looking ahead, an almost-total solar eclipse will occur on August 12, 2026, covering more than 90% of the sun. Moore encourages those interested in viewing a total solar eclipse to plan a trip to Spain, as the last total solar eclipse observable from Ireland was in 1724. The next one won’t take place until 2090.
