Major Raids in Limerick Seize €400,000 and Rhinoceros Horns
URGENT UPDATE: Gardai in Limerick have confirmed the seizure of approximately €400,000 and a collection of high-value items, including suspected rhinoceros horns, during a major operation in Rathkeale on Tuesday. This raid targeted individuals linked to serious transnational criminal activities, marking a significant blow to organized crime in the region.
The operation involved searches at eleven locations, where authorities uncovered a range of illicit goods, notably designer bags, luxury watches, and items believed to be rhinoceros horns, which are currently undergoing expert examination. A spokesperson for Gardai stated, “A significant number of other items were also seized, which will be subject to further technical and forensic examination.”
The black market value of rhinoceros horns has surged dramatically, reaching as high as US$60,000 per kilogram. These horns are often sought after for use in Traditional Chinese Medicine and as status symbols, despite an international ban on their trade established by CITES in 1977.
A female suspect connected to the investigation has been released without charge as authorities prepare a file for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Gardai emphasized that investigations are ongoing, signaling potential further developments in this high-stakes case.
This operation underscores the persistent challenges posed by organized crime and the illegal wildlife trade, which not only threaten endangered species but also contribute to wider criminal networks. As the investigation unfolds, Gardai continue to seek further intelligence to dismantle these operations.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops, and understand the critical implications of these actions for wildlife conservation and local safety.
