Malcolm Hebden Retires: Iconic “Corrie” Star Steps Back at 81

BREAKING: Malcolm Hebden, beloved star of Coronation Street, has officially announced his retirement from acting at the age of 81. The news comes as fans reflect on his iconic role as Norris Cole, a character he portrayed for nearly three decades in the hit soap opera.
Hebden, who turned 81 on December 21, 2020, confirmed his decision to step back from the limelight earlier this month. His final appearance in Coronation Street occurred in June 2020, when the character of Norris tragically died off-screen from a stroke. The announcement of his character’s death came in early 2021, marking the end of an era for the beloved show.
Malcolm Hebden has had a storied career, starting with his role as Carlos, Mavis Riley’s boyfriend, in the 1970s before cementing his legacy as Norris in 1994. His character became known for his nosy personality and unforgettable storylines, including a memorable kidnapping plot inspired by Stephen King’s *Misery*.
Despite his success, Hebden faced significant challenges, including a near-fatal heart attack in late 2017. This health scare led him to step back from filming until March 2019, when he made a brief return before ultimately retiring.
Hebden’s impact on the show has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Best Onscreen Partnership with co-star Barbara Knox at the 2006 British Soap Awards. His comedic talent earned him the title of Funniest Character at the Inside Soap Awards in both 2001 and 2002.
Since his retirement, Hebden has maintained a low profile but made a rare appearance in October 2023 for a documentary celebrating Knox’s 90th birthday. He was also spotted supporting his former co-star Sam Aston during his stint on Dancing on Ice.
Hebden, who married his wife Liana Dimbleby in 2009, has chosen to keep his personal life away from the public eye, focusing instead on his health and well-being in his later years.
As fans and former colleagues celebrate his contributions to British television, Malcolm Hebden’s legacy as a cherished figure in Coronation Street will undoubtedly endure. Stay tuned for more updates on this beloved star and his journey beyond the screen.
