Man, 20s, Dies in M8 Crash; Road Closed as Investigation Underway

URGENT UPDATE: A man in his 20s has tragically died following a devastating single-vehicle crash on the busy M8 motorway in Co Cork this morning. The collision occurred southbound at Junction 18 Upper Riverstown in Glanmire at approximately 6:50 AM. Emergency services, including Gardai, swiftly responded to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead after being rushed to Cork University Hospital.
Authorities have confirmed that the M8 remains closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conduct a thorough examination of the area. This incident marks a heartbreaking milestone, as it is the 109th fatality on Irish roads this year, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety.
In light of this tragedy, Gardai are urgently appealing for witnesses. They request that anyone who may have seen the collision or has dash-cam footage from 6:40 AM to 7:15 AM come forward.
“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them,” a spokesperson stated. Those with information can reach Mayfield Garda Station at 021 4558510 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
Earlier this week, a separate incident in Co Limerick involved a woman in her 40s, who was hospitalized after her vehicle left the road on the R512 in Uregare, near Bruff, at around 12:15 PM on Monday. The woman was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries and also transported to Cork University Hospital.
As investigations continue, Gardai are seeking any witnesses or individuals with relevant footage to aid in both inquiries.
