Man Charged After Knife Threats in Limerick, Court Hearing Held

UPDATE: A man has been charged following a shocking incident in Co Limerick where multiple individuals were allegedly threatened with a knife. The arrest occurred last night after armed officers from An Garda Síochána responded to urgent reports in Newcastle West.
At approximately 9 PM on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, local authorities received alarming calls regarding a male threatening members of the public in the Maiden Street and North Quay areas. In a swift response, the Divisional Armed Support Unit was deployed, leading to the apprehension of the suspect, a man in his 30s, at a nearby location.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. Following the arrest, he faced a special sitting of the Limerick District Court on Wednesday evening, August 20, 2025, where he was charged with multiple offences.
Despite the gravity of the situation, no injuries were reported among the public. A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána stated, “As this matter is now before the courts, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.”
