A man has been charged in connection with an aggravated burglary incident in Cork and is seeking bail to care for his elderly father. The case involves a burglary that occurred on August 11, 2025, at a property located on Lagan Grove in Mayfield, Cork city.

Malcolm Kelly, aged 39, from Coolageala, Kanturk, Co. Cork, faces multiple charges including burglary with intent to commit criminal damage and assault, as well as a separate count of criminal damage. The alleged incident took place at approximately 12:40 a.m., when three men reportedly entered the residence armed with implements and confronted the occupants before fleeing the scene.

During a sitting at Mallow District Court on Tuesday, Kelly was remanded in custody and informed the court of his intention to apply for bail at a subsequent hearing. He described himself as the primary caregiver for his father, who is 85 years old, and expressed his urgency to secure bail in order to provide necessary support.

Kelly appeared before the court via video link, where he stated, “I am waiting on a letter from my doctor which relates to my forthcoming bail application.” He plans to formally request bail in light of his responsibilities as a caregiver.

Judge Monica Leech presided over the session, during which Sergeant Gearoid Davis noted that the Garda Síochána is still awaiting directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) regarding the case. Defence solicitor Diana Halloran indicated that her client consents to a two-week remand, leading to Kelly’s scheduled appearance before the Cork District Court on August 29, 2025.

The Garda Press Office previously reported that another man in his 30s was transported to a local hospital by ambulance following the incident. Investigations into the burglary are ongoing, with a technical examination having already been conducted at the scene. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on the implications for both Kelly and the individuals affected by the burglary.
