Man Charged with Assault During Presidential Canvass in Dublin
UPDATE: A man has been charged in connection with an alleged assault during a presidential election canvass in Dublin. Daniel Soave, aged 39, appeared before the Dublin District Court on Monday, October 27, 2025, facing serious charges that have drawn significant public attention.
The incident took place on North Strand Road on Friday, as Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald campaigned for presidential candidate Catherine Connolly, who later won the election. Soave faces charges of assault causing harm and two counts of engaging in threatening or abusive behavior, igniting outrage within the community.
Court proceedings were marked by tension as Garda Colm Maguire reported that Soave was arrested shortly before 6 PM on Saturday. During the hearing, he made no reply to two charges but allegedly dismissed the third, stating, “What’s that all about? Complete lies. I never pushed anybody.”
Authorities did not object to bail conditions, which include mandatory sign-ins at a garda station twice a week, residing at his home address, and refraining from any contact with campaigners or witnesses. Furthermore, Soave must provide a phone number to the authorities within 72 hours and is prohibited from posting about the case online.
Wearing a green and grey jacket, Soave appeared cooperative, responding affirmatively when asked by Judge Derek Cooney if he would comply with the bail conditions. Legal aid was granted to Soave, who is currently employed but facing significant rent expenses.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 15, 2025, as the community watches closely for further developments in this high-profile case. The incident highlights the rising tensions surrounding political campaigning in Ireland, making it a topic of urgent discussion among citizens.
As this story unfolds, the implications for both Soave and the broader electoral process in Ireland remain to be seen. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
