Man Charged with Mother’s Murder Remanded in Custody in Cork

A 25-year-old man has been remanded in custody following his second court appearance on charges related to the murder of his mother and the assault of his father near their home in Cork. David Gallagher, residing at Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, is accused of murdering his mother, Stella Gallagher (59), on November 17, 2023, and assaulting his father, Brian Gallagher (63).

During a video link appearance at the Cork District Court on Wednesday, Gallagher faced a charge of murder alongside a second charge of assault causing harm, in breach of Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act. The court learned that the alleged incidents occurred at their family home on the same date.

Sgt Gearoíd Davis requested a two-week remand for Gallagher, which was acknowledged by his solicitor, Shane Collins Daly. Judge Mark O’Connell subsequently ordered Gallagher to reappear at Cork District Court on December 10, 2023.

When Gallagher was initially charged last week, Det Sgt Niall Hayes confirmed that he had undergone a medical assessment upon his arrest at the Bridewell Garda Station. Since his detention, he has reportedly been seen by a doctor every eight hours, indicating that his health and well-being are being monitored closely during this period.
