Mary Poppins Sparks Outcry: 224 Complaints Over Discriminatory Language

URGENT UPDATE: Disney’s classic film Mary Poppins has ignited significant controversy in 2024, becoming the most complained about film of the year due to its use of discriminatory language. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has reported a staggering 224 complaints regarding the film’s recent reclassification from U (Universal) to PG (Parental Guidance), raising alarms over its suitability for children.
The BBFC Annual Report and Accounts for 2024 revealed that the controversy primarily stems from the film’s use of the term “hottentots,” a derogatory reference to the indigenous Khoikhoi people of southern Africa. This term is used twice in the film, including a moment where Admiral Boom, portrayed by Reginald Owen, refers to chimney sweeps using this outdated and offensive language.
The reclassification was undertaken ahead of a planned cinema re-release to celebrate the film’s 60th anniversary. The BBFC noted that although the film has historical context, the lack of criticism or condemnation around the derogatory term raises concerns that young viewers may repeat it without understanding its offensive nature.
In total, 56 complaints were officially lodged with the BBFC regarding the reclassification alone. Regular research indicates that parents are increasingly worried about exposing their children to discriminatory language or behavior, making this issue particularly pressing.
The backlash against Mary Poppins has overshadowed other films, including Barry Keoghan’s Saltburn, which received just 10 complaints for its mature themes. The BBFC defended the film’s 15 classification, stating that while it contains disturbing elements, it does not include graphic nudity or excessive explicitness.
This controversy around Mary Poppins is likely to fuel further discussions about the appropriateness of classic films in contemporary society. As the debate continues, parents and guardians are urged to be vigilant about the content their children consume.
As the story develops, stakeholders in the film industry and parents alike are watching closely. The long-standing legacy of Mary Poppins has now become entangled in a broader conversation about cultural sensitivity and historical representation in cinema.
