UPDATE: Major construction has just begun on a groundbreaking €23.6 million mixed-tenure housing scheme in Claregalway, County Galway. Announced by Minister James Browne during his visit today, this project aims to address the pressing housing needs in the area, marking a significant milestone as the county’s first council-led shared equity initiative.

The development will include 88 units of social and affordable housing, alongside essential community amenities such as a crèche, landscaped open spaces, and a playground located on Lakeview Road. This initiative is bolstered by a substantial €12 million funding injection from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, designed to create vibrant, sustainable communities.

Construction, which commenced last week, is set for completion by September 2026. The project is part of a broader strategy to enhance living conditions and infrastructure in Claregalway and its surroundings.

During his visit, Minister Browne also inaugurated housing projects in Ardrahan and Tuam. In Ardrahan, a 10-unit social housing scheme at Caisleán Raithin was funded with €3.3 million from the Social Housing Investment Programme (SHIP). This development features a mix of single-storey and two-storey homes, strategically located within walking distance of the village center.

In Tuam, the Minister officially opened the 29-unit Pairc na Cille social housing development, funded by €8.1 million from the SHIP initiative. Completed in late 2024, this project includes a variety of one to four-bedroom homes and a sheltered care unit managed by Ability West, aimed at providing 24-hour care for residents.

Minister Browne emphasized the importance of integrating essential infrastructure with housing projects. “When individuals and families receive keys to their new homes, they need more than just a roof over their heads; they require transport links, employment opportunities, and amenities to foster liveable communities,” he stated.

Additionally, the Minister inspected ongoing upgrades at Oranmore train station, where a new pedestrian and cycle underpass is currently being installed. This enhancement will allow access to a second platform, slated for construction in early 2026. A one-kilometre dynamic passing loop will also be developed, significantly increasing train frequency in both directions. This project is supported by nearly €10 million from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and the Department of Transport.

Councillor David Collins, Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, stated, “The Baile Chláir development addresses the strong housing need in the town and surrounding area. With family-friendly facilities and accessible open spaces, the scheme will create a welcoming environment for residents.”

These developments not only reflect the government’s commitment to tackling the housing crisis but also signify a step forward in providing essential services and infrastructure to support growing communities. The urgency of these projects highlights the ongoing need for sustainable development in Galway and beyond.
