Munster Kicks Off Women’s Interprovincial Rugby Championship Today

UPDATE: The Women’s Interprovincial Rugby Championship kicks off today as Munster prepares to face Connacht at Virgin Media Park, Cork, with a 4:15 PM kick-off. This highly anticipated match marks the beginning of a competitive season that could extend over the next three weekends, culminating in a potential final appearance at Energia Park in Dublin on August 30.
Head coach Matt Brown has announced that Maeve Óg O’Leary, a dynamic 25-year-old international, will lead the Munster squad as captain. O’Leary’s experience is invaluable; she was instrumental in Munster’s previous three consecutive championship wins in 2021, 2022, and 2023.
O’Leary expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s great to be back this season and an absolute privilege to be leading the girls alongside Chloe Pearse and Stephanie Nunan.” Both Pearse and Nunan, also from Limerick and members of UL Bohemian, serve as joint vice captains. O’Leary emphasized the team’s commitment, saying, “We have been training hard these past number of weeks and have been growing and connecting as a team on and off the pitch.”
The match against Connacht will be closely watched, especially with new talent like Aoife Grimes and Saoirse Crowe from Shannon vying for their first senior provincial caps. This year’s championship promises to showcase emerging players and fresh talent as Munster seeks to defend its title.
As the championship unfolds over the coming weeks, fans can expect thrilling matches against Leinster and Ulster. The stakes are high as Munster aims not only to progress but to maintain its legacy in women’s rugby.
