UPDATE: National Hedgerow Week has just concluded with a vibrant foraging walk led by Monica Fleming in Dunmore, Kilkenny City. This event, part of a nationwide initiative, highlighted the vital role of hedgerows in biodiversity and community engagement.

The week-long celebration, which ran from August 29, 2025, included expert-led discussions at Teagasc Kildalton College, where Dr. Catherine Keena emphasized the ecological benefits of hedgerows. These natural corridors are essential habitats, supporting numerous species, including 35 of the 110 regularly recorded countryside birds in Ireland, as well as various mammals and insects.

Participants gathered for the foraging walk to explore the rich variety of plant species along the mass path. They learned about the health benefits of wild fruits like rosehips and how to incorporate elderberry and sloes into their diets. Bernadette Moloney, Biodiversity Officer with Kilkenny County Council, expressed gratitude for the insights shared by Fleming, marking this as the last in-person biodiversity event for 2025.

This gathering not only celebrated the natural beauty of hedgerows but also fostered connections among farmers, ecologists, and community members. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these vital ecosystems. The community is encouraged to stay engaged through ongoing programs, including the Sign Post Webinar Series by Teagasc, which covers a range of topics relevant to both farming and the wider public.

As the region prepares for the upcoming Sustainable Development Goals Week, residents are urged to participate in future learning opportunities. Upcoming webinars feature experts like Professor Grace McCormack from University of Galway, who will discuss native Irish honey bees on September 12.

Stay tuned for more updates on community initiatives and biodiversity efforts that continue to shape Kilkenny and beyond. Share this story to encourage others to embrace the importance of hedgerows and biodiversity in our environment.
