National Ploughing Championships Set to Draw 250,000 Visitors

The National Ploughing Championships will take place from September 16 to 18, 2023, at Screggan, just outside Tullamore in County Offaly. This marks the first return to this location since 2018, after adverse weather conditions forced the cancellation of the second day of the event that year. Anticipation is high, with organizers expecting approximately 250,000 visitors over the three-day event.

The championships, set on a 700-acre site framed by a Marian shrine, have historically attracted large crowds due to their central location and easy access from major motorways. This year, the weather has been favorable for farmers, with a balance of sunshine and rain enhancing crop yields. According to Francie Gorman, president of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA), the agricultural sector has benefited from what he described as “ultra-co-operative” weather conditions.

Despite the positive weather, challenges remain for certain sectors of agriculture. While livestock and dairy farmers report good conditions, tillage farmers are facing difficulties due to a global oversupply that has depressed grain prices. The IFA is advocating for a financial support package in the upcoming budget to assist these farmers. Prior to the championships, IFA representatives met with Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon and Fine Gael party leader Simon Harris to discuss these pressing issues.

Key Issues and Political Engagement

Trade negotiations, particularly concerning U.S. tariffs and the controversial Mercosur trade deal with South American countries, are also significant topics for the farming community. The deal, which aims to reduce import tariffs on EU-South American trade, has met with resistance from farmers and environmentalists concerned about the impact of cheaper agricultural products entering the European market.

Minister Heydon described the year as a “good year for farmers,” while acknowledging the need for resolutions on outstanding issues, such as the State’s nitrates derogation and potential changes to the Common Agricultural Policy payments, which could be significantly altered under a draft proposal from the European Commission.

Political Presence and Competitive Spirit

The upcoming championships are expected to attract increased political interest, coinciding with a presidential election campaign that will be in full swing during the event. Anne Marie McHugh, assistant managing director of the championships, anticipates attendance from all presidential candidates, as well as a notable appearance from President Michael D. Higgins, who is expected to participate in one of his final public engagements in office.

McHugh emphasized the event’s role as a platform for rural Ireland, stating, “Everything in the week of the ploughing is about rural Ireland. We are very proud of the forum we give to farmers that week.” With more than 350 competitors expected to take part, she noted that Irish ploughers are currently “at the top of their game.”

The championships promise to be a celebration of agricultural skills and community spirit, showcasing the dedication and hard work of farmers from all corners of Ireland. As preparations continue, the farming sector looks forward to a vibrant event that highlights both their achievements and ongoing challenges.
