New EV Charging Points Set for Installation in East Limerick

Four new public electric vehicle (EV) charging points will be installed in key locations across east Limerick within the next six months. This initiative aims to support the growing number of electric vehicle owners in the region and was confirmed during the October meeting of the Kilmallock-Cappamore Municipal District.

The fast charging points will be strategically located at the public library in Kilmallock, Sycamore Drive in Bruff, the Square in Caherconlish, and on Monastery Road in Doon. The announcement came as a response to a query from Cllr Brigid Teefy, who sought an update on the rollout and timeline for these much-needed facilities.

In addressing the council, John O’Leary, acting senior executive engineer at the council’s Transportation and Mobility Directorate, provided details on the project. He explained, “Following the appointment of Weev Limited as the Charge Point Operator for the Limerick EV Pilot Sites Project in Q2 2025, the site Detailed Design Phase has now been completed.” O’Leary indicated that the contractor for the civil works mobilized in September, with a projected completion date set for November 2025.

Installation Timeline and Technical Details

O’Leary further noted that the installation, testing, and commissioning of the 100KW fast chargers are expected to be completed by the end of March 2026, pending the finalization of connections with ESB Networks. This timeline marks a significant step towards enhancing the infrastructure for electric vehicles in Limerick.

The decision to install these charging points aligns with the increasing popularity of electric vehicles in Ireland, reflecting a broader shift towards sustainable transportation options.
