URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking mobile sensory room has just launched at the Cappamore Show in Limerick, providing a vital space for individuals with autism and sensory differences to escape overwhelming stimuli. The innovative unit, which debuted on September 30, 2023, is the first of its kind in Ireland, designed specifically by autistic individuals for their peers.

Officials from ASD Ireland report that the sensory room aims to create a calm oasis in the midst of the agricultural event’s chaos—where cattle, horses, and music can overwhelm visitors. CEO Keith Enright, originally from Clarina, emphasized the importance of this project: “This is a safe space where they can come in, close the door, and block out all that noise outside.”

The mobile sensory room, which cost €60,000 funded entirely by public donations, caters to both children and adults, making it inclusive for all ages. “We had children as young as two and adults up to 65 in here today,” said Enright. “Autism doesn’t just stop because you turn 18; we provide support for adults as well.”

The facility includes various sensory materials that address auditory, visual, and tactile needs, allowing users to engage in a calming environment tailored to their individual challenges. “Different items support different parts of the autistic person’s brain,” explained Enright.

ASD Ireland, founded by Enright and Caroline Hogan to combat the lack of inclusive activities for their children with autism, has been a lifeline for approximately 3,500 people annually. The charity relies solely on public donations and local business support, highlighting the community’s role in making this sensory room a reality.

With plans to attend more events across Limerick and beyond, ASD Ireland encourages organizers to reach out for potential collaborations. Enright invites interested parties to contact him via email at [email protected].

This launch not only marks a significant advancement in autism support but also illustrates the power of community-driven initiatives. As the Cappamore Show unfolds, many families can now enjoy the festivities while knowing a safe space is available to help manage sensory overload.

Expect more updates as ASD Ireland continues to bring this essential resource to events nationwide, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate fully in their communities.
