UPDATE: The new St John’s Bridge in Kilkenny was officially opened to traffic on October 23, 1910, marking a significant milestone for the community. The ceremony, attended by a large gathering of citizens and county officials, celebrated a collaborative effort between the Corporation and County Council, which funded the project at a cost of over £6,000.

The opening was officiated by Mayor J. H. Connellan and Joseph Walsh, J.P., Chairman of the County Council, who represented the unanimous wishes of the Joint Bridge Committee. The Mayor delivered a heartfelt address, signifying the bridge’s importance to both the city and the county.

Constructed under the plans of A. M. Burden, C.E., the new structure boasts a remarkable span of 140 feet, making it the longest ferro-concrete bridge in the United Kingdom. While it may not possess all the architectural charm of its predecessor, its modern design offers substantial advantages for local businesses and transportation.

On either end of the bridge, two elegantly engraved mural tablets, crafted by local sculptor Michael O’Dwyer, commemorate the occasion and the dedication of the community.

The event drew significant attention, with numerous local officials present, including members of both the County Council and the Corporation, along with a diverse crowd of citizens. Among those in attendance were Dr. R. E. Griffin, James Kelly, and many others who came to witness this vital infrastructure development.

As Kilkenny embraces this new bridge, the focus now shifts to the immediate benefits it will bring to the region. The enhanced connectivity is expected to facilitate business operations and improve daily commutes for residents.
