Over 1,000 Oysters Seized in Illegal Harvesting in Co Kerry

BREAKING: A large group of individuals has been caught illegally harvesting over 1,000 wild oysters in Co Kerry, with all oysters subsequently returned to the sea. The incident, which occurred at low tide in Kenmare Bay, a designated Special Area of Conservation, was reported by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI).
Officers from IFI observed the group hand-picking oysters and seized 612 native oysters during an initial search of two vehicles. A follow-up search uncovered additional bags of oysters, bringing the total count to over 1,000. Both vehicles involved in the operation have been confiscated by authorities.
Many of the seized oysters were below the legal minimum size of 76mm required for licensed harvesting, raising significant environmental concerns. Under Section 277 of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act 1959, harvesting oysters without a valid license is prohibited, with offenders facing substantial fines.
Sean Long, IFI’s South-Western Director, expressed relief at the successful seizure, stating,
“IFI is pleased our protection team prevented such a large quantity of oysters being taken from Kenmare Bay. This would have resulted in a significant loss to the local environment.”
Authorities are currently preparing a prosecution file against the individuals involved in this unlawful activity. This urgent crackdown highlights the ongoing efforts to preserve marine biodiversity and protect local ecosystems from illegal fishing practices.
As this story develops, the community and conservationists alike will be closely monitoring the legal proceedings and environmental impact. Stay tuned for more updates on this critical issue affecting Co Kerry’s natural resources.
