Over 180,000 Homes Without Power as Storm Amy Strikes Hard
URGENT UPDATE: Storm Amy Leaves Over 180,000 Homes Without Power
Developing news: More than 184,000 homes, farms, and businesses are currently without power as the aftermath of Storm Amy wreaks havoc across multiple counties in Ireland. As of 5:15 PM today, areas hit hardest include Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, and Donegal.
Authorities confirm that the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) has warned of further outages expected throughout the evening. The severe weather conditions continue to pose a significant threat, with an Orange wind warning in effect for Galway until 10 PM and a subsequent Yellow warning until midnight.
ESB crews and partners are actively assessing the extensive damage and working diligently to restore power where conditions allow. However, the company has cautioned that, due to the challenging weather, it is likely that many customers will remain without power through the night.
“Our crews will continue the restoration for as long as possible this evening but, with the difficult conditions, it is likely that the majority of customers will not have their power restored tonight,”
stated an ESB representative. They also expressed gratitude for the patience of affected customers, acknowledging the disruption this has caused to families and businesses.
In addition to power outages, many roads in Galway have become impassable due to flooding and fallen debris, further complicating recovery efforts. The storm’s impact is expected to persist into Saturday morning, with a Status Yellow wind warning set to affect Clare, Kerry, Galway, and Mayo from midnight until midday.
Residents are urged to stay indoors and monitor local updates as conditions remain volatile. Authorities are providing ongoing information to ensure safety and assist recovery efforts.
Next steps: Keep an eye on updates from the ESB and local weather forecasts as crews work under challenging conditions. The situation remains fluid, and further advisories are likely as Storm Amy continues to impact the region.
