Over 60 Patients on Trolleys at University Hospital Galway Today

URGENT UPDATE: University Hospital Galway is facing an unprecedented crisis today, with over 60 patients currently on trolleys. This alarming situation follows a weekend surge, during which 393 individuals visited the Emergency Department, resulting in 82 admissions on September 13 and 14.

As of this morning, the hospital reports 37 patients are waiting in the Emergency Department, and a total of 62 patients are on trolleys, including those at the ward level. All available beds are occupied, and the hospital has opened additional surge beds to manage the influx. Despite these efforts, patients are enduring long wait times for admission to a ward.

The hospital has announced that due to ongoing pressures and limited bed capacity, some elective procedures are being postponed. However, urgent and time-sensitive procedures are being prioritized to ensure critical care is delivered without delay. Affected patients are being contacted directly regarding the status of their procedures.

In an official statement, the hospital emphasized,

“As always, people who do require emergency care are encouraged to attend EDs where they will be prioritised.”

The hospital also acknowledged the difficulties faced by patients and their families, apologizing for the distress caused by these delays.

Officials urge the public to reserve Emergency Department visits for genuine emergencies only, advising that individuals should first consult their GP or use out-of-hours services when possible. For less severe injuries, the Roscommon Injury Unit is open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, catering to both adults and children over the age of five.

As the situation evolves, the hospital remains committed to treating all patients who present at the Emergency Department. Those with serious injuries or illnesses will be assessed and treated as a priority, while non-urgent cases may experience extended wait times.
