Paula Guckian’s Inspiring Cancer Recovery Journey: A Call to Action
URGENT UPDATE: Paula Guckian, a 45-year-old mother from Leitrim, has shared her powerful journey of resilience and recovery from breast cancer, urging women to prioritize their health. After discovering a lump in March 2022, Guckian faced an alarming cancer diagnosis that changed her life.
In a heartfelt statement, Guckian revealed, “I finally feel like I’m almost back to myself.” Her battle began when she found a lump under her right arm while showering. Initial reassurance from her GP proved unfounded as the lump persisted, leading her to insist on a mammogram. On December 29, 2022, at St James’s Hospital in Dublin, she underwent a biopsy that confirmed her worst fears: an invasive ductal carcinoma requiring chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and a mastectomy.
The emotional toll of her diagnosis was profound. Guckian reflected, “I was more concerned about losing my long hair, which was my identity, than my breast at that point.” After enduring a 12-week chemotherapy regimen, she underwent a mastectomy, a moment filled with dread yet hope. “You’re going to go into surgery and you will come out of it without your breast, but you will also come out without cancer,” her surgeon reassured her.
Now, following her recovery, Guckian has begun radiotherapy and immunotherapy, culminating in breast reconstruction in September 2023. “Before the reconstruction, every time I looked in the mirror, I was reminded of my cancer. Now, I’m ready to close that chapter and look forward to my future,” she said.
Guckian is not just focusing on her recovery; she is also committed to raising awareness about breast cancer. She emphasizes the importance of checking for irregularities and seeking immediate medical advice. “Any woman who presents with a lump, regardless of whether or not she fits into the at-risk bracket, should have a mammogram,” she urged.
Statistics highlight the urgency of her message: one in seven women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, with 3,700 new cases diagnosed annually in Ireland alone.
Guckian will participate in the Very Pink Run on September 6, 2023, in Leopardstown, Dublin, to support Breast Cancer Ireland. “I won’t be running, but I will be walking with my close friends who supported me throughout my journey,” she stated, encouraging others to join the cause.
Aisling Hurley, CEO of Breast Cancer Ireland, echoed the call for awareness and research. “Raising awareness about breast cancer is crucial. Every Very Pink T-shirt worn and every step taken brings us closer to a future entirely free from breast cancer,” she said.
The emotional weight of Guckian’s story resonates deeply as she reflects on her journey. “I wish I could go back and hug myself, saying it’s going to be OK,” she expressed, acknowledging the strength gained through her ordeal.
As Guckian continues to heal, her story serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder for women everywhere to listen to their bodies and advocate for their health.
Stay tuned for more updates on Guckian’s journey and join her in raising awareness for breast cancer.
