URGENT UPDATE: The pilot tragically killed in a plane crash in Waterford has been identified as Bircan Dokuzlar, a 48-year-old father-of-two from Turkey. Reports confirm that Dokuzlar was the sole occupant of the private Vulcanair P68C when it crashed into a field near Waterford Airport on Thursday at approximately 12:50 PM.

Emergency responders, including rescue helicopters and Gardai, rushed to the scene at Lisselan, close to Tramore. The aircraft had taken off from Sligo earlier that day, destined for Beziers, France, when it experienced difficulties, turning back toward Waterford before the fatal crash.

Authorities are currently working with Interpol to contact Dokuzlar’s family. Media outlets in Turkey have reported that he had been dismissed under a KHK decree and relocated to Germany to start anew. A GoFundMe page established in his memory has already raised nearly €30,000, underscoring the community’s support for his family during this devastating time.

The GoFundMe campaign describes Dokuzlar as a man known for his “diligence, honesty, and dedication.” It further states: “This sudden and devastating loss has left his family not only in deep grief but also facing the heavy burden of funeral, burial, international transportation, and the many needs the family now faces without him.”

The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) has deployed four inspectors to the crash site to determine the cause of the accident. The wreckage was removed from the scene on Friday and transported to an AAIU facility in Gormanstown, Co Meath.

As investigations continue, the emotional toll on Dokuzlar’s family is significant. The GoFundMe campaign emphasizes the financial and emotional challenges they face, stating: “This period is extremely challenging for the family, both financially and emotionally. All support collected will help lighten the Dokuzlar family’s burden during this difficult time.”
