Planning Approved for Major Upgrades at Freshford Health Centre
Planning permission has been granted for a series of upgrades to the **Freshford Health Centre** in **North Kilkenny**, a decision that local officials describe as a significant enhancement to healthcare services in the region. This facility currently serves over **500 patients weekly**, and the improvements aim to better accommodate the needs of the community.
The planned works include a **single-storey extension**, modifications to the vehicular entrance, and alterations to the car park layout to create additional parking spaces. Additionally, the existing wastewater treatment infrastructure will be upgraded, along with essential ancillary works at the centre.
Local councillor **Michael McCarthy** expressed his satisfaction with the approval, stating, “This is a fantastic boost for the community of Freshford and the large surrounding hinterland.” McCarthy has been a vocal advocate for the health centre’s improvements, having invited then Minister of Health **Stephen Donnelly** to visit **Freshford** two years ago to discuss potential enhancements.
The councillor particularly acknowledged the efforts of the **Beckett family**, who have served the community for over four decades. “They have campaigned tirelessly for improvements to the health centre over all those years,” McCarthy added, highlighting the family’s dedication to local healthcare.
With the planning phase now complete, tender documents will be prepared, and a contractor is expected to be appointed shortly. McCarthy anticipates that construction will commence in the near future, bringing much-needed upgrades to the facility.
This development marks a crucial step forward in addressing healthcare demands in the area, ultimately benefiting patients and families in Freshford and surrounding regions.
