Plans Unveiled to Demolish Ballybane Pub for New Student Housing

BREAKING: Plans have just been announced to demolish the controversial Ballybane pub, known as The Lantern, and replace it with a new 31-bed student accommodation block. Developers Glen Ward and Maureen McDonagh are seeking immediate permission for this significant project at the Ballybane Shopping Centre.
The Lantern has remained vacant for several years, having closed its doors in 2019. During its final operational year, the pub drew considerable attention from local law enforcement, with Gardaí responding to numerous incidents. Initially, a license renewal for the establishment was denied due to complaints from both Gardaí and local residents. Although the license was later granted, the pub was ultimately sold off.
Local sentiment may shift positively with the unveiling of this new vision. The proposed development includes the demolition of the infamous pub, making way for a four-storey building. The ground floor will feature a retail unit, while the upper levels will house student accommodations.
City planners are expected to make a decision on this project by September. Many residents are likely watching closely, as this redevelopment could significantly alter the landscape of Ballybane and meet the growing demand for student housing in the area.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, and consider how this change may impact the local community.
