Polish Millionaire Apologizes After US Open Hat Incident

UPDATE: A Polish millionaire is under fire following a shocking incident at the US Open that has gone viral. Piotr Szczerek, CEO of the paving company Drogbruk, was filmed snatching a signed cap intended for a young fan during a match on September 3, 2023. The moment has sparked outrage online, with many deeming it “embarrassing” and “disgusting.”
Video footage shows the moment Kamil Majchrzak, a Polish tennis star, handed the cap to a child in the stands, only for Szczerek to swoop in and take it for himself. Social media erupted, with users condemning Szczerek’s actions. One viewer wrote, “A grown man straight up took a player’s hat that was clearly meant for a kid.”
In the wake of the backlash, Szczerek issued a formal apology on his social media, clarifying the misunderstanding. “In the excitement, I thought the hat was meant for my sons, who had asked for autographs earlier,” he explained. “I know it looked like I deliberately took the child’s souvenir. That was not my intention.”
Strongly feeling the heat of public scrutiny, Szczerek confirmed the cap was returned to its rightful owner, stating, “I hope my apology has at least partly repaired the hurt.”
The tennis star, Majchrzak, stepped up to ensure the child received a signed cap and even posed for photos, transforming an awkward moment into a heartwarming one.
This incident serves as a reminder of the power of social media and the quick reactions it can inspire. Szczerek’s experience illustrates that in today’s connected world, actions—especially those perceived as inappropriate—can quickly become public spectacles.
As for the boy who lost his cap, he now has a memorable story to share, while Szczerek is left with a valuable lesson: never compete with a child for a souvenir, especially when the internet is watching.
