Popular Limerick Priest Retires After 50 Years of Service
BREAKING: Canon Willie Fitzmaurice, a beloved priest in the Limerick Diocese, has officially retired after an impressive 50 years of dedicated service. The heartfelt celebration took place in Croom’s Town Park during an open-air Mass on August 15, 2023, coinciding with the Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption.
More than 200 people gathered to honor Fitzmaurice, who has touched the lives of many in parishes including St John’s in Limerick city, Kilmallock, Croom, and Banogue. His commitment to the community has been unwavering, marked by years of pastoral care and involvement with local schools.
Reflecting on his long career, Fitzmaurice stated, “It’s been a pleasure to serve the different communities over the last 50 years. Each role was demanding, but each of them was very worthwhile.” His words resonate deeply with the community, highlighting the significant impact he has had throughout his ministry.
The Mass also paid tribute to Tom Moloney, a long-serving sacristan in Croom, who is retiring alongside Fitzmaurice. Both men have been pivotal in fostering community spirit and support in their respective roles.
Despite stepping down, Canon Fitzmaurice plans to continue assisting within the Limerick Diocese, ensuring that his presence and support remain felt. “The thing about retirement is to be able to enjoy it, enjoy life, as one should do at any stage in life,” he remarked, indicating his intent to embrace this new chapter.
Fitzmaurice, originally from the parish of Killeedy, was also part of the 1973 All-Ireland winning hurling panel, adding a layer of local heroism to his legacy. His retirement marks not just the end of an era but the beginning of new opportunities for both him and the communities he has served.
As news of his retirement spreads, many are taking to social media to express their gratitude and share their memories of Canon Fitzmaurice. His dedication and warmth will undoubtedly be missed, but his influence will continue to inspire.
Stay tuned for further updates on how the Limerick community is responding to this significant change. The legacy of Canon Fitzmaurice will surely live on in the hearts of those he has served.
