UPDATE: The Portsalon Golf Club celebrated a lively 2025 Past Captains Day on September 20, 2025, showcasing the camaraderie and competitive spirit of its former leaders. Despite challenging near-gale winds, the event drew former captains for a memorable round of golf, culminating in an exciting evening of recognition and celebration.

Hugh McGinley and Deirdre O’Toole emerged as the champions of the day, each claiming top honors in their respective categories. McGinley, demonstrating skill over distance, secured the men’s title with an impressive score of 38 points. O’Toole, battling through a winter cold, achieved a personal milestone by winning the ladies’ trophy for the first time, also scoring 38 points.

The day began with a gathering of former captains hosted by Lady Captain Roisin McCormack and Captain Brendan Cullen, who provided a warm welcome despite the fierce winds. The conditions led to unexpected challenges on the course, including a notable incident involving player Dermot Boyce, whose wayward tee shot hilariously found its way into a lady’s golf bag, sparking laughter among teammates.

Despite the weather, the atmosphere remained positive as players navigated the course. McGinley recounted vital moments during his round, stating, “There were a couple of nervous moments, but we kept it together.” His strategy paid off, and he ultimately took home the coveted Past Captain’s trophy.

O’Toole’s victory was equally significant, as her determination amidst illness showcased the resilience of golfers. She remarked on the day’s festivities, stating, “It’s always a pleasure to celebrate our Past Captains.” The camaraderie continued during a gathering in the clubhouse, where attendees shared stories and laughter over dinner, highlighting the event’s emotional significance.

As the club looks ahead, the next major event is the Mary McDaid Cup, scheduled for September 27. Led by Lady Captain McCormack, the team is set to compete against Letterkenny Golf Club and Rosapenna Golf Club in a tribute to lady golfers who have passed away. This annual event not only promotes competition but also fosters remembrance and community.

Golf enthusiasts should also note the commencement of the Ladies Winter Links series, starting on September 25. This series will run monthly until March, offering more opportunities for local golfers to engage and compete.

Additionally, mark your calendars for the Play in Pink fundraiser on October 10, aimed at supporting breast cancer research. This event encourages participation from both men and women, promoting unity and awareness in the community.

With the spirit of friendly competition and community at the forefront, Portsalon Golf Club continues to thrive as a hub for golf enthusiasts in Donegal. Stay tuned for more updates as the club gears up for an exciting fall season!
