UPDATE: President Catherine Connolly participated in the 15th Annual Swimmers Mass at St Mary’s Church, the Claddagh on November 11, 2023, just days before her inauguration. This beloved event brought together the community to commemorate swimmers and others who passed away in the past year, with Connolly leading a gathering of local public representatives including Mayor Mike Cubbard.

The annual Mass, organized by Dr Dom Colbert, featured emotional tributes as Joanie Fallon read the names of deceased swimmers. Celebrated by Fr Matthew Farrell OP and Fr Tim Mulcahy OP, this year’s gathering was marked by a large congregation, blending regular attendees and passionate swimmers alike.

Dr Colbert, a daily swimmer, highlighted the significance of swimming, stating, “Never have I met anyone who has regretted having had a swim.” He emphasized the wellbeing and community spirit swimming fosters, adding, “The caring that swimmers give one another is the face of Love.” His remarks resonated deeply with attendees, emphasizing the emotional and social benefits that arise from this aquatic pursuit.

The event concluded with hospitality at the Galway Bay Hotel, courtesy of swimming member Dan Murphy, allowing attendees to share reflections and camaraderie. Music for the liturgy was provided by Frankie Colohan and Carla Merrigan, contributing to the festive atmosphere.

Among the attendees were notable public figures like Minister Hildegarde Naughton, Senator Rónán Mullen, and Councillors Mary Hoade and Helen Ogbu, showcasing the event’s importance in Galway’s community calendar.

As the community gathered to celebrate both life and the spirit of swimming, the event highlighted the connections that form in the face of loss, reinforcing the significance of shared experiences in building resilience and joy.
