PSNI and Gardaí Urge Road Safety Ahead of Festive Season
UPDATE: The PSNI and An Garda Siochana have launched an urgent road safety appeal today in Bridgend, emphasizing the need for vigilance among all road users as the festive season approaches. With 168 people tragically losing their lives on Irish roads this year, including 10 in Co. Donegal, officials are calling for immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
Today, December 8, 2025, Superintendant David Kelly highlighted the importance of addressing the “fatal five” driving offenses in Northern Ireland and the “fatal four” in the Republic of Ireland. He urged communities to engage in conversations about dangerous driving habits, stressing the critical need to act before it’s too late.
In a powerful statement, Kelly said,
“We must prioritize safety on our roads, especially during this busy time of year. It’s vital to discuss these issues with loved ones and promote responsible driving.”
Chief Inspector Celeste Simpson, head of Road Policing for the PSNI, reinforced the collaborative efforts between the two authorities. “Both agencies are working tirelessly together to ensure safer roads for everyone,” she stated. The message is clear: every road user has a role to play in preventing accidents.
As the holiday season brings increased traffic, both organizations are ramping up their joint efforts to enhance road safety measures. The appeal is not just a seasonal message; it is a call to action aimed at saving lives.
Authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations, especially during this festive period when road usage significantly increases. Officials are also reminding the public about the importance of using designated drivers and public transportation when consuming alcohol.
The joint initiative will include increased visibility of police patrols and checkpoints to ensure compliance with road safety laws. Both the PSNI and An Garda Siochana are committed to reducing road fatalities and making this holiday season safer for all.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
