In a heartfelt post shared by the band’s lawyer, Bertis Downs, he recounted the challenges leading up to the performance. Lead singer Michael Stipe underwent emergency surgery for a hernia, and drummer Bill Berry suffered a brain aneurysm, collapsing on stage just before the concert. Despite these critical health concerns, the band persevered, marking their return to touring after a six-year hiatus.

“It was touch and go ahead of the gig,” Downs reflected, emphasizing the resilience of the band. He noted,

“Mike was not at 100%, but it was safe medically for him to play—the band, including Mike, delivered an amazing performance.”

The performance at Slane Castle became a defining moment, showcasing the band’s deep connection to Ireland, which they consider a second home.
