Senator Demands Emergency Meeting After Drones Disrupt Zelensky Visit
URGENT UPDATE: An Independent Senator is calling for an emergency meeting of the Defence and National Security Committee following alarming drone sightings during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s historic visit to Dublin. Senator Gerard Craughwell has expressed serious concerns over national security, stating that the incident reflects poorly on Ireland’s defense capabilities.
Earlier today, multiple drones were visually confirmed by the Irish Navy as they hovered near the capital during Zelensky’s engagement with Government leaders and his address to a joint sitting of the Oireachtas. The absence of adequate radar technology in Ireland left authorities vulnerable, sparking outrage and demands for immediate action.
Senator Craughwell criticized the current state of Ireland’s defense, highlighting a significant shortfall in spending. He stated, “Our defense spending is 1.49 billion EUR, which is only about 0.23 percent of our GDP. In contrast, most European nations are allocating between 3 to 5 percent of their GDP to defense.” He emphasized that without sufficient investment, Ireland risks becoming “Europe’s weak spot.”
Reacting to the incident, Craughwell expressed deep concern over national sovereignty, declaring, “If we cannot defend our people, if we cannot stand as a proud, independent, sovereign state in Europe, what exactly are we?” This statement underscores a growing sentiment among officials that immediate reforms are necessary.
In light of these developments, the Gardaí are now investigating the drone sightings, which have raised serious questions about Ireland’s security infrastructure. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated as it directly impacts national safety during a visit from a critical ally in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
As the situation unfolds, attention will focus on the committee’s response and whether it leads to immediate changes in defense policy. The call for greater investment and improved technology could reshape Ireland’s approach to national security.
Stay tuned for updates on this rapidly developing story as officials continue to assess the implications of this incident on Ireland’s defense readiness and international standing.
