An inspiring moment unfolded on September 4, 2025, at The K Club in Kildare, as 11-year-old Dáire Coyle met his idol, professional golfer Shane Lowry. Dáire, who is in remission from acute myeloid leukaemia, had his dream realized thanks to the efforts of Make-A-Wish Ireland, which arranged the meeting as part of the Amgen Irish Open events.

Dáire, who began playing golf after receiving his first set of clubs from Santa last Christmas, joined Lowry during the Pro-Am tournament. The young fan had the opportunity to walk the ninth hole with the 38-year-old golfer, taking putts for him while asking questions about his career and future plans in the sport.

“This wish has meant the absolute world to Dáire, who gave it an 11 out of 10,” said his father, David Coyle. The family, which also includes Dáire’s mother, Orla, and brothers Eoin (16) and Donal (13), stayed at the Westgrove Hotel in Clane, where they were welcomed with a special hamper of golf-themed goodies.

“Our experience has been nothing short of royal,” David Coyle remarked. “Meeting Shane Lowry has been a dream come true. Golf is a big part of our family, and without Make-A-Wish, we never would have had this opportunity. Witnessing the joy on Dáire’s face is something we will cherish forever.”

Make-A-Wish Ireland’s Commitment

The chief executive of Make-A-Wish Ireland, Susan McQuaid O’Dwyer, expressed gratitude for Lowry’s involvement in making this wish a reality. “The resilience shown by children like Dáire inspires us all,” she stated. “A wish is so much more than a single moment; it brings joy, hope, and treasured memories to the whole family, reminding them of what truly matters.”

She added, “We are deeply grateful to Shane Lowry for his generosity, and to the DP World Tour and Amgen for facilitating this extraordinary wish during the Irish Open.”

The Amgen Irish Open began with the Celebrity Pro-Am, followed by several days of tournament play featuring some of the world’s top golfers, including Rory McIlroy and Lowry himself.

The event not only highlights the competitive spirit of the game but also demonstrates the profound impact that acts of kindness can have on individuals and families facing challenging circumstances. Dáire’s experience serves as a heartwarming reminder of the power of dreams and the importance of community support.
