Soumillon Shines with Early Double at Irish Champions Festival

Christophe Soumillon made a remarkable impact at the Irish Champions Festival on September 9, 2023, securing two early victories at Leopardstown. He first showcased his talent with a commanding ride on **Diamond Necklace** in the Ballylinch Stud Irish EBF Ingabelle Stakes, followed by a decisive success in the Group 2 KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes aboard **Benvenuto Cellini**.
Soumillon stepped in for **Aidan O’Brien**, who was without his first and second jockeys, **Ryan Moore** due to a broken femur and **Wayne Lordan** serving a suspension. His performance proved invaluable as he switched from an expected ride on Montreal to the **Frankel** offspring, who entered the race as the 1-2 favourite and won by five lengths. This victory marked the second career success for the chestnut colt, who previously triumphed in Killarney.
O’Brien expressed high hopes for Benvenuto Cellini, noting his potential as a future **Derby trial horse**. “He looks like he’s going to be a lovely middle-distance horse,” said O’Brien. “Christophe had the choice to come to the right or left rail, and it was easier to go to the right rail. But he’s lovely, and I couldn’t be happier.” O’Brien highlighted the horse’s impressive qualities, stating that he is a compact yet substantial animal with exceptional walking and galloping abilities.
In the opening stakes, **Diamond Necklace** initially struggled with her starting position, falling behind early in the race. However, Soumillon’s adept handling allowed her to recover and gain momentum, ultimately winning by two and a quarter lengths. “It was quite amazing that she was able to push the filly out on the outside,” Soumillon remarked, praising her maturity despite her inexperience.
As the day unfolded, Soumillon’s excitement was palpable. “I’m so happy,” he shared, acknowledging the opportunity to replace Moore, whom he regards as one of the best jockeys in history. O’Brien commended Soumillon’s ride, noting that the pace was honest and that he had been patient with Diamond Necklace, who is expected to compete in future prestigious races.
Rahmi Triumphs in Sovereign Handicap
**Johnny Murtagh** celebrated a significant win as **Rahmi** claimed the €90,000 prize in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Sovereign Handicap. The six-year-old horse delivered a powerful performance, edging out competitors with a final sprint down the outside. Murtagh, who has a storied history at the Irish Champions Festival, expressed satisfaction with Rahmi’s performance, particularly after earlier setbacks this season.
“Rahmi had a little bit of a holdup earlier in the year,” Murtagh explained, noting that the horse was not at full strength during previous races. Despite starting as a 14-1 underdog, Rahmi secured victory over **Glenfinnan** and **Tribal Nation**, finishing one and a quarter lengths ahead.
Murtagh highlighted the importance of this win, stating, “It’s nice to get one on the board early. Champions Weekend is a big weekend.” His training strategy and the horse’s performance reflect the competitiveness and excitement of the festival, which attracts top talent from the racing world.
The Irish Champions Festival continues to be a focal point for racing enthusiasts, showcasing exceptional talent and thrilling performances. As Soumillon and Murtagh celebrate their victories, the anticipation grows for the remaining events and potential future champions emerging from this prestigious gathering.
