UPDATE: Storm Claudia is moving away from Ireland, but urgent weather warnings remain in place as thousands are still without power and flooding risks continue. As of this morning, October 15, 2023, a Status Orange rain warning for Dublin, Wexford, and Wicklow expired at 8 AM, but a Status Yellow rain warning for 13 counties—including Carlow, Kildare, and Cork—lasts until 9 AM today.

Authorities report that the storm, named by Spain’s meteorological agency, has caused significant rainfall accumulation, with some areas experiencing up to 60mm in the last 24 hours. Many regions remain under windy conditions, increasing flooding risks as river levels rise.

Met Éireann advises continued vigilance, noting that while conditions may improve throughout the day, the saturated ground could lead to prolonged flooding and travel disruptions even after warnings lift.

Residents across eastern and southern counties are still dealing with widespread power outages due to storm damage. The worst-hit areas include Birr in Co Offaly and Newbridge in Co Kildare, with over 2,000 customers in the Abbeyfeale area of Co Limerick still without power. Repair crews are battling challenging conditions as they work to restore electricity.

Flooding remains a major concern, particularly in regions where heavy rain fell overnight. Dublin City Council’s flood response teams are mobilized, focusing on the River Dodder area, where extreme water levels have made certain landmarks barely visible.

In Cork, a Level 1 flood response is active as authorities manage reservoir levels and monitor for excess surface water. Meanwhile, travel disruptions continue, with Dublin Airport reporting flight cancellations due to the storm. Passengers are urged to check with airlines for updates.

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management is closely monitoring river levels across the affected regions throughout the weekend.

As Storm Claudia passes, authorities warn that falling trees and flooded roads pose ongoing risks.

“Motorists should not attempt to drive through flooded areas, and pedestrians should avoid walking through floodwaters due to hidden hazards,”

a Garda spokesperson said.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and exercise caution as the situation develops.
